Trainee and Internship Program

The J1 Trainee & Internship Program is a structured cultural exchange initiative that provides international participants with opportunities for practical training, professional development, and cross-cultural learning in the United States.

Participants are placed with American host organizations where they can apply academic knowledge, gain structured training, and experience U.S. culture. The program is designed to foster career growth, global competence, and cultural understanding, preparing individuals for future success in their chosen fields.

•  Interns – Currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within 12 months) from a post-secondary degree or certificate program.
   
• Trainees – Hold a post-secondary degree plus one year of related experience, or five years of professional experience in the chosen field.
   

• Professional Development – Enhance your skills through structured training in your chosen field.
   
• Cultural Exchange – Immerse yourself in U.S. culture while sharing your own heritage.
   
• Career Growth – Strengthen your resume with international training experience.

• The Professional Career Training program is available for 6-month, 12-month and 18-month duration, except for the “Hospitality and Tourism” program which doesn’t support the 18-month duration.

• The Internships program is available for 6-month and 12-month durations.

• A trainee must be a foreign national who:

                       o Has a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary                       academic institution and at least one year of prior related work experience in his or her occupational field outside the United States; or

                      o Has five years of work experience outside the United States in the occupational field in which they are seeking training.

• An intern must be a foreign national who:

                        o Is currently enrolled in and pursuing studies at a foreign degree- or certificate-granting post-secondary academic institution outside the United States; or

                        o Has graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to their exchange visitor program start date.
